Three: The Perfect Number AND Age

The timeline of raising triplets goes something like this, in my experience: The early months  of having triplets blurs by.  You have no sleep, you know you've had coffee, because you are awake, but you can't remember if you ate.  You hear kids crying, even when kids aren't crying; and even when they aren't with you. Year one is fun, but it is still lots of work.  Its like those first years of college, where you are suddenly being challenged in all kinds of new ways, but its all so fun and exciting that who cares.  Its like, well raising Gremlins. By year two , the novelty has worn off.  This is the time when those kids that couldn't handle the excitement of college have dropped out.  But there isn't any dropping out of parenting.  And there is a reason they call it the Terrible Twos - at this age parenting is more like managing a baseball team full of ... um, interesting personalities. And then you hit three years old, and it gets hard...

Time-Travelling Triplets

I have triplets and I need help.  I'm sure you probably already figured that, but this goes beyond the uniqueness of raising triplets.  You see, I have kind of a unique parenting problem to share with you that needs the attention of top notch scientists at NASA or some top science lab.   Because I don't want my family to end up in the hands of angry, gun-wielding agents, I’m throwing this secret out to the blogosphere so you can direct me to the good scientists.  Like maybe those guys in the movie ET.  The ones in the version with the guns edited out.  More moral and less angry ones, if possible.  Back to the problem at hand: I have a broad, but fairly shallow understanding of the science I’m about to get into, which is why I need the help, but stay with me. You see, I have time-travelling triplets .  They can literally alter time; seemingly at will. Case in point: I look down at my watch and, lucky me, I have an hour to get th...

How Not To Take Your Kids To The Park: A Story In Failure

One day recently we didn’t have child care, so I took the day off to spend with my little bundles of joy. At one point I had two kids in the bathroom while Rand ran off through Burger King yelling for his shoes.  That spectacle ended with one of them peeing all over their pants and underwear. I spend a fairly significant amount of time providing childcare and I like to think I’m usually a pretty good Dad who is on top of things and able to go with the flow.  But this whole adventure made me remember an event this summer when I took the threesome to the park. It was an adventure in how not to take your kids to the park.  Learn from my mistakes, people! Overpromise To Beings Who Tend To View Life As One Long Car Advertisment: THE BIGGEST DEAL EVER First off, I had my expectations way, way too high.  That probably rubbed off on my little ones.  It’s a lesson I should know: Underpromise, over deliver. My second mistake was ramping up the excit...
