I Really Should...

... write an ode to Yunnan jig tea. It's great, honestly.  Smooth and delightful with just the right amount of punchy flavor.  Not coffee, but nicely caffeinated.  If you don't know what I'm talking about, find some loose leaf Yunnan jig and brew away.  May I suggest something from www.adagio.com? ... creatively write more.  I have a few story ideas.  At least 3, including the one I've already written and desperately need to edit and round out.  But its such a ... chore.  I really like reading, and I don't mind writing.  I actually enjoy writing one-off stuff like I do here.  But putting together 75k-100k in a complete order that makes sense and completes a story arc?  Ugh. Its all ... so much.  Blame my years in journalism, where I write tons of one-off stuff where the narrative is kind of half written for (Speaking of this blog and writing) ... post more here.  As with all things, I guess, time is hard to find, whi...

Reasons Not To Have Kids

Orlando; Dallas; Charleston. Brexit.  Less than one-third of people polled believe the United States is headed in the right direction. Admittedly, if you drill down and focus just on certain events, the world can seem pretty bleak. Almost as if its falling apart.  I would - have! - argue that you would be wrong. I would also argue that its irresponsible. Not just as citizens of society, but as parents, as well. B ecause the belief that we are worse off today than pretty much any period in time is an artifice of the mind  psychologists  call  habituation . Its a trick our brain plays on us. You get that new phone or car or apartment and you love it. And then as the weeks go by you become acclimated to it. The new and exciting becomes background. You forget how good you have it. The emphasis on current also means we tend to forget about the past, when things were also violent and hateful. Which is what we do when we pretend that a single current even...

Better Bryan XVI: The Blog Goals

So here we are, the first week of 2016. We spent the week reviewing 2015, which is already a distant speck in the rear view mirror. But looking forward, what are the goals for 2016? Post every week:  This ties in to a couple other goals, but I'd love to post at least once every week (every week being 51 weeks - guy gotta take a vacation). I put up 39 posts in 2015. I'd like to put up no fewer than 45 this year, with the absolute goal being 51, as I said. Grow the blog:  This isn't a numbers thing (that is below). I'd like to come up with another feature for the blog. Something like What We Are Eating Wednesday that features pictures of what we ate that week. I've flirted with a "30-Seconds With Triplets" feature that I may break out. Grow the numbers . I'd to write well enough and promote often enough that no single month in 2016 is lower than my slowest month in 2015. That won't be all that hard to accomplish. My bigger goal, and I'm alm...
